How do I know which service is right for my child?
Start with a free discovery call. We’ll ask questions, listen to your concerns, and help you find the right fit—whether that’s a course, tutoring, or IEP support.
What age students do you work with?
We specialize in supporting students in 4th grade through high school, though some younger learners (grades 2-3) may be accepted on a case-by-case basis.
Do you offer in-person services?
No, all services are delivered virtually — allowing families across the country to access consistent, flexible support. There’s no need to worry: sessions are nothing like the impersonal or chaotic virtual instruction many families experienced during COVID. Lessons are live, engaging, and carefully tailored to each learner, so students feel seen, supported, and confident every step of the way.
Tutoring Questions
What’s different about your tutoring?
Sessions follow the Science of Reading and structured literacy principles, drawing from an Orton-Gillingham approach and supported by rigorous Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling (LETRS) training and practices. Instruction is customized, age-respectful, and led by a credentialed special educator who understands the developmental needs of students at all stages.
How often should my child attend tutoring?
Most students benefit from two sessions per week. Frequency can be adjusted based on your child’s needs, goals, and family schedule.
How long are sessions, and what’s the cost?
Sessions are 60 minutes long and cost $75 per session. Monthly billing options are available for convenience.
Do you offer assessments?
While formal diagnostic evaluations are not provided, a variety of skills inventories and informal assessments are used to guide targeted instruction. This includes the WADE Assessment for decoding and encoding skills, oral reading fluency checks to monitor progress, and soon the Capti ReadBasix Assessment — the screener recommended by the Minnesota Department of Education. These tools help pinpoint each learner’s strengths and areas for growth, ensuring instruction is focused, efficient, and responsive. Assessment results can also be shared with schools to help support requests for evaluations or additional services.
What if my child is very far behind?
That’s exactly who this program is for. Instruction meets students at their current level and moves at a pace that builds skills and confidence — step by step.
Course Questions
What’s the difference between the live and self-paced courses?
The live course includes real-time instruction in a small group with built-in feedback and community. The self-paced course allows your child to move through lessons at their own speed—with optional check-ins.
What’s the difference between the live and self-paced courses?
No. We provide full instruction—but you’ll receive updates and optional reinforcement tips to stay involved in your child’s learning.
How long do courses run?
These robust courses were developed to run from September to May, following a traditional school year model. The self-paced version will be available year round starting the Summer of 2026.
Can this course replace our current homeschool curriculum?
Yes — AmpUP is designed to serve as a complete structured literacy curriculum, especially for students needing targeted remediation or multisensory instruction. The course thoroughly covers phonics, morphology, vocabulary, reading skills, fluency, and comprehension. However, it does not include other language arts elements commonly found in a full homeschool curriculum, such as literature studies, book reports, or creative writing. Families wanting a comprehensive language arts program may wish to pair AmpUP with additional resources for those areas. Recommendations are available upon request to help choose materials that complement the skills learned in this course.
IEP Help Questions
What can I expect in an IEP consultation?
IEP and advocacy consulting empowers parents with expert support to understand, navigate, and actively participate in the special education process. This includes reviewing IEP documents, identifying strengths and gaps, preparing for meetings, and learning how to confidently advocate for a child’s unique needs. You’ll receive personalized coaching, document review, and clear action steps to help you advocate with self-assurance.
Do I need to have an existing IEP to work with you?
No. We help parents at all stages—including those just beginning the special education process.
Can you attend school meetings with me?
Direct representation at school meetings is not provided. Instead, coaching is intentionally designed to help you understand when and why having outside representation may be helpful — and when it can actually complicate or harm the process. You’ll be thoroughly prepared with clear talking points, scripts, and strategies so you feel fully equipped to advocate effectively and build positive, productive relationships with your child’s team.
Do you help with private or homeschool situations?
Yes. We support families across public, private, and home-based education models—including adapting IEPs for use at home.
Can you help me adapt an IEP for homeschooling?
Absolutely. We’ll guide you through rewriting goals, adjusting services, and documenting your educational plans.
Do you offer resources just for homeschooling families?
Yes. Many of our courses and consultations include parent-only resources tailored to homeschool life.
Is Your Literacy Lighthouse faith-based?
No. Services are secular and designed to be inclusive and supportive for families of all backgrounds and beliefs.
Homeschooling & Special Education
How do I pay for services?
Payments are processed securely online via Quickbooks. Some services are billed per session; others are subscription-based or prepaid.
Can I cancel or reschedule a session?
Yes — life happens! A minimum of 24 hours’ notice is required to cancel or reschedule a session. Advance notice allows another family to use that time slot and keeps scheduling fair for everyone. Flexible rescheduling options are offered whenever possible. No-shows or late cancellations may be charged in full.
